Settlement Workers are placed in 160+ schools from the Toronto District School Board as well as the Toronto Catholic District School Board. We have Settlement Workers at elementary, middle and secondary schools; colleges and universities; three Toronto Public Libraries (Parliament, Thorncliffe and Flemingdon); across City of Toronto sites to assist newcomer students and families with One-to-One Settlement Services and related Group Workshops (see description of services provided here) from community-based location’s.

SWIS / LSP Programs Offer

School System Integration

  • TNO helps to orient newcomers to the Canadian school system, integrating programming for newcomer “student success”

Newcomer Orientation Week (NOW)

  • provides orientation to newly arrived high school students during the summer before school starts, Peer Leaders-students who were newcomers in recent years facilitate these weekly mentorship sessions.

Welcome and Information for Newcomers (WIN)

  • Orients newcomer youth entering middle school (grades 6-8) and their parents. WIN is a one-day program where teachers and Peer Leaders are instrumental in its implementation.

Orientation Topics Include

  • Ontario school curriculum’s, layout of the school, rules & school procedures, graduation requirements, ESL & guidance counsellors, timetables, extra-curricular activities, using their locker, etc.
