On June 19th, the St. James Town Seniors’ Forum brought together more than 85 older adults at the Wesley Community Centre for a heartwarming celebration of Seniors Month. Hosted by the Older Adults Consortium, the day was filled with connection, learning, laughter, and meaningful moments.
The morning began with a delicious breakfast lovingly prepared by the St. James Town Catering Collective, setting a warm and welcoming tone for the day. A touching candlelight memorial followed, honouring the lives of seniors we lost over the past year. Special tribute was paid to Yogaraja Chelladurai, celebrating his legacy and contributions to the community.
The forum kicked off with a highly engaging presentation: “OAS, GIS & CPP: What You Need to Know.” The topic sparked lively discussion, with seniors asking thoughtful and important questions about the benefits they rely on.
Next up, the room came alive with music as the beloved St. James Town Choir, “Make Some Noise”, took the stage. Their joyful tunes had everyone clapping, smiling, and tempted to dance along!
The learning continued with a fascinating presentation on “Birds and Us: How Community Science Helps Protect Our Feathered Friends” by Bird Friendly Toronto. Attendees were captivated by the stories and science of urban birdlife and were eager to learn how they could help protect their winged neighbors.
A hearty lunch—once again prepared by the talented team at the Catering Collective—was served, giving everyone a chance to relax and chat over good food.
The afternoon brought two inspiring sessions:
“Bright Minds at Every Age: Boosting Brain Health Naturally”, and
“Using the Voice as a Tool for Healing.” Both were well-received and sparked meaningful reflection on self-care, wellness, and personal growth.
“Every wrinkle tells a story of laughter, love, and life lived fully.”– Unknown.
The day wrapped up with an exciting raffle, where gift cards and prizes brought wide smiles and cheerful applause. But perhaps the most rewarding part of the day was hearing directly from the seniors—many shared positive feedback and expressed interest in helping plan next year’s forum!
This event was made possible by the collaboration and dedication of the Older Adults Consortium of the St. James Town Service Providers’ Network, with heartfelt thanks to its members: Progress Place, TNO, Dixon Hall, Sherbourne Health, Hospice Toronto, TNG, Fred Victor, and the incredible staff and volunteers from St. James Town.
Together, we celebrated the strength, wisdom, and vibrant spirit of our senior community—reminding us all that connection, care, and celebration have no age limit.
